Abstract:

Introduction Radiation exposures from diagnostic medical examinations are generally low and are almost always justified by the benefits of accurate diagnosis of possible disease conditions. Therefore, entrance skin dose (ESD), body organ dose (BOD), and effective dose (ED) from adult patients undergoing routine thorax posterior-anterior (PA) and thorax right lateral (RLAT) were estimated in University Hospital, Port Harcourt, Southern Nigeria. Materials and Methods Totally, 102 patients were considered in this work. Using software packages to carry out ESD, BOD, and ED is a recent resource in dosimetry and is being widely used in hospitals. The software used in this work was  CALDose_X 5.0. The software makes use of the technical exposure parameters and the tube output of the X-ray machine. Results The estimated ESD median values were 0.96 and 1.85 mGy for thorax posterior anterior (PA) and right lateral (RLAT), respectively. The highest BOD was in the adrenals (270 µGy) for thorax PA and Liver (263 µGy) for thorax RLAT. Similarly, ED for thorax PA and RLAT examination were 0.068 and 0.107 mGy, respectively. Conclusion It could be observed that examinations that imparted the highest ESD were thorax PA when compared with the established dose level. Therefore, these results call for quality assurance program (QAP) in diagnostic X-ray units in Nigeria hospitals.

Impact of quality control on radiation doses received by patients undergoing abdomen X-ray examination in ten hospitals

ABSTRACT   Background: The X-ray machines used for radiodiagnosis should meet certain quality assurance (QA) programmes . These are necessary to have good quality radiographs at reasonably low exposure to patients.   Materials and Methods: Dose reduction methods in abdomen X-ray examination were carried out in 10 hospitals in Tehran. This paper presents the work, which was implemented on 200 ...

Patient doses from X-ray computed tomography examinations by a single-array detector unit: Axial versus spiral mode

Background: X-ray computed tomography (CT) examinations deliver a significant amount of radiation doses to patients comparing to conventional radiography examinations. The objective of the current study was to analyze and investigate the average patient received dose from axial and spiral CT exams in a medical imaging center. Material and Methods: In this study, the patient imaging tec...

Reconstruction of doses from occupationally related medical x-ray examinations.

Many nuclear weapons complex workers were required to undergo medical x-ray examinations as a condition of their employment. To ensure that their dose reconstructions are complete, it is necessary to include the contributions from these examinations. X-ray procedures that must be evaluated include: (1) posterior-anterior and lateral radiography, and/or photofluorography, of the chest; (2) anter...

Evaluation of Organ and Effective Doses to Patients Arising From Some Common X-Ray Examinations by PCXMC Program in Sabzevar, Iran

Introduction The purpose of this study was to estimate organ and effective doses in patients undergoing some common X-ray examinations in Sabzevar, Iran. The effective dose is one of the best parameters for describing the amount of radiation dose received by a patient undergoing any diagnostic X-ray examination. The public dose from X-ray examinations depends on various factors, and its contrib...
